The club plays in three different leagues, with half the games at home at the Chiswick Town Hall, and half the games away at other clubs. In order to help you find the away venues, some information on each is set out below. Chess club venues can change at short notice, so although I have given addresses here I have included links to each club website, which should always be up to date. If you spot any changes or errors please contact Andy Hayler.
Central London League
Most Central London league chess is played at Pimlico Chess Club; in 2018 this moved to
The Community Centre underneath Morgan House, Lillington Gardens Estate, off Vauxhall bridge Road SW1V 2LF. The nearest tube is Pimlico, but it is also around a ten minute walk from Victoria station. If coming from Victoria then Morgan House (a block of flats) is on the right, just after Charlwood Street. You walk down a ramp and there is a gap under the building. Follow this, and straight ahead is a sign saying "Community Centre".
Other venues are as follows.
Athenaeum chess club
Dudley Court, Tenants' Hall, 36 Endell Street, London WC2. Dial 100 and press "Enter" on the security system at the entrance. Someone will open the door or come and meet you. Once inside, go through the lift lobby, turn right, and the venue is the second door on the right. The nearest tube is Covent Garden, but Tottenham Court Road, Holborn and Charing Cross are all within 10 minutes' walking distance.
Greater London chess club
Venue. Lower Vestry House, St George's Church, 6-7 Little Russell Street, WC1A 2HR.
London Deaf chess club
Their website says 38 Ebury Street, SW1W 0LU but this is wrong. It is actually 34 Grosvenor Gardens, which is nearby. The nearest tube station is Victoria. Note that the north-east end of what is marked as Ebury street is actually Grosvenor Gardens, which can be quite confusing. From Victoria Street keep walking west from Victoria Station until you see a grassy triangle. 34 Grosvenor Gardens is on the corner, a few yards after the turning into Ebury Street from Victoria Street. It is actually less than a 5 minute walk from the station but is easily missed. The venue is on the ground floor on the left of the entrance, which is up a short flight of stone steps. The room is visible from the street, and it may be easiest to just bang on the window until someone notices you, as the buzzer label that used to mark the room has now been removed. The moral is: allow a bit of extra time to find the place.
Cavendish Chess club
Millman Street Community Centre,30 Millman Street, WC1N 3EW. Take passage between houses about halfway along the east side).
There is also Golden Lane. Community Centre, Golden Lane Estate, Golden Lane EC1. Nearest tube: Barbican. On exiting the tube cross the road by the traffic lights ahead, turn immediately left, and 150 yards ahead turn right past the Shakespeare pub. The community centre is more or less straight ahead in the centre of the estate.
