About the Junior Club

The Junior club is on Saturday mornings at the Town Hall in the Committee Room from 11:00 to 13:00. Tuition is given by Meri Grigoryan a West London Chess Club member who is a woman FIDE master and ECF Accredited Coach. Boys and Girls welcome. Chess Workshop (1st July) and GM Simul (8th July)

After the success of our initial 'Chess Workshop' in May, we are following it up with a second one to be held on the 1st of July. The purpose of this workshop is to give useful chess information to club level chess players and will be of particular benefit to aspiring intermediate players. The session will be conducted by Mark Lyell starting around 7:15 PM at Chiswick Town Hall. The cost will be £7 (£5 for club members).

On the 8th July there will be a simultaneous exhibition match against Grand Master Alexander Cherniaev also starting at 7.15pm. The price is £10 for members £12 non-members and £7 for juniors.

Chess Workshop

FIDE Master Mark Lyell will be holding a chess analysis workshop on the 20th May, starting at 7.30 pm. The session will be at least two hours in length and the first part of the session will cover submitted games on the demonstration board. In the second part of the session, Mark will be analysing ad-hoc game submissions on an individual basis. If there is time, he will cover illustrative games or endgame theory.

The cost is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. If you are interested, please contact Mark Lyell.

3rd WLCC Rapidplay Results

Running up to Christmas, there were only 7 participants, so the prizes had to be revised. The winners were as follows:

  • 1st, with 5 points - Russ Campbell - £18
  • 2nd, with 4½ points - Przemek Majcherczak - £12
  • 3rd, with 4 points - Raghu Kamath - £10

We will resume rapidplays in the Spring/Summer.

3rd WLCC Rapidplay

We are holding another Rapidplay tournament to be played over two Wednesday sessions on the 3rd and 10th of December. The details are as follows:

  • Fixtures: Two Wednesday sessions, the 3rd and 10th of December at Chiswick Town Hall, starting at 7:30pm.
  • Format: 6 rounds at 25 minutes per side (unrated). Pairing will be done by computer according to FIDE/swiss tournament rules.
  • Entry fee: £10 with £5 concessions for non-workers.
  • Results will go up somewhere on this Web site.
  • Prize money is dependent on the number of players, but the following is guaranteed:
    • 1st place - £20
    • 2nd place - £15
    • Best under 150 - £15
    • Best under 120 - £15

AGM Summary

Twelve people attended the AGM this year. The main points are as follows:
  • The Team captain reports show we had another successful season, with teams promoted into Middlesex League Division 2 and London League Division 2.
  • A new 8-person team has been entered into London League Division 4, replacing the 4-person team in the "Fun" Division.
  • Mark Lyell won the Henderson Cup for best Middlesex Division 1 performance, Raghu Kamath won the Sir George Thomas Cup for best London League Performance and Richard Matzko won the Spires Trophy for or best Middlesex Team 2 performance.
  • Most of the existing officers we re-elected. Mark Lyell replaces Meri as the Equipment Officer and Ed Tandi is the captain for the new Division 4 team.
  • The date for the AGM has been brought forward to July.

2nd WLCC Rapidplay Results

There were 10 participants and the results were very close, with 6 of the participants finishing on 3 points. £70 was awarded in prizes:

  • Winner on 5.5 points: Richard Matzko (won £20)
  • Second place on 4.5: Colum Jezierski (Won £15)
  • Best Under-150 on 3 points:
    • Edward Tandi (Won £5)
    • Russell Campbell (Won £5)
    • Alex Brown (Won £5)
  • Best Under-120 also on 3 points:
    • Paul Bombal (Won £10)
    • Patryk Kazaniecki (Won £10)

2nd WLCC Rapidplay

Due to popular demand, there will be another Rapidplay held over two Wednesday sessions, on the 27th August and 3rd of September. It will be in the same format as the last one, see the posts below. It is open to members and non-members alike, so if you are interested, please send an e-mail to webmaster@westlondonchess.com.

Summer Rapidplay Results

The event was a success with 14 participants, some from other clubs. £76 was awarded in prizes:

  • Winner on 5 points: Mark Lyell (won £22)
  • Second place on 4.5 points: Colum Jezierski (won £18)
  • Best Under-150 on 4 points: Raghu Kamath (won £18)
  • Best Under-120 on 3 points:
    • Jesus Martinez (won £6)
    • Paul Bombal (won £6)
    • Barry Sutton (won £6)

A number of players chose to donate some of their winnings to the club. The full results can be found here. Largely due to good feedback and requests, we may be holding another rapidplay late August / early September.
